Therapy Animals

We are delighted to inform you that we will plan to  introduce a number of therapy animals and at this time we currently have two therapy dogs in school to provide therapeutic interventions and to support pupils with reading activities. There is a wide range of research and evidence to support the use of a therapy dog in school.

This research includes:

  • A positive impact on the mental health of pupils and staff
  • The development of confidence in reading of those who find reading out loud difficult
  • The development of communication and social skills
  • Developing an increased understanding of responsibility and care for animals •As a reward incentive for positive engagement and behaviour in school
  • The opportunity for pupils to participate in extra-curricular activities to gain a qualification in animal care

The dogs we have chosen belong to the two Deputy Headteachers, Robin and Millie.

Robin's dog is a Blue Merle Border Collie called ‘Alfie’. This breed has been chosen due to the socialable and friendly nature of the breed.  Alfie continues to undergo training and will be gradually introduced to the school and our pupils.

Millie's dog is a Cream Whippet called ‘Ovie’. Again, this breed has been chosen due to the socialable and friendly nature of the breed.  Ovie also continues to undergo training and will be gradually introduced to the school and our pupils.

Both dogs will be fully insured to work in school and with our pupils.

The full ‘Dog in School’ policy and risk assessment can be found below. Working with our therapy dog is entirely optional and you and/or your child can choose to opt out by letting us know. If you wish to do so, your child will not be expected to be in the same environment (i.e. a classroom) as the dog and will not have any direct contact with the dog. If you are happy for your child to be involvement with this intervention, then you do not need to respond.

We are sure you will agree that this is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils and we are looking forward to developing Alfie’s role in school.  If you have any queries/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
