What is the Rights Respecting School Award?
UNICEF UK's Rights Respecting School Award recognises the achievements of putting the convention at the heart of the school ethos. The initiative gives ways of inspiring and supporting schools who want to provide children with a rights/respecting way of living.
At Prospect House Specialist Support Primary School we are a Bronze Award Rights Respecting School, we are working towards attaining our Silver Award.
Our Core Values are intrinsically linked to the ‘Rights of the Child’ and we believe that children should be at the heart of everything we do. For children to make the most of their opportunities they need to have an understanding of their rights. School is responsible for promoting a rights-respecting environment and for developing and understanding that rights apply equally to everyone globally. Children should be given the opportunity to learn about the wider world and understand their responsibilities so that everyone can fulfil their rights.
Our Core Values:
We Love to Learn -Article 28, 29, 30
We are Safe, Healthy and Happy - Article 12, 23, 24, 27, 39
We Try Our Best - Article 3, 6, 13
We like that we are all different - Article 2, 29, 30
We Work Together - Article 9, 12, 15, 19, 27, 39
We respect everybody - Article 1, 2,13, 14

Pupils at Prospect House have once again been awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools’ Green Flag with Distinction.
This academic year, students at Prospect House have once again received international accreditation for their exceptional work in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness amongst their peers.
The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2023-24, more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England. The programme follows a tried-and-trusted seven-step framework, that encourages young people to explore a variety of environmental issues before spearheading environmental action in their school and local community.
Since Prospect House first engaged with the Eco-Schools’ programme in 2022, accomplishments have included the establishment of an eco council, the introduction of recyling in every classroom and annual Clean Air Day event.
This year pupils impressively built on these achievements by focusing on key issues. The Eco-Committee then successfully delivered a diverse range of activities including new growing areas and equipment for every class, working with external agencies and partners and delivering inspiring projects around the school grounds and beyond.
Speaking about their achievements Eco Schools commented on 'You’ve inspired enthusiastic young environmentalists who are excited about sustainability and empowered to make a difference, so it’s no surprise pupil engagement has been a highlight of your journey'
Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: ‘The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice. Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet. Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable, place.’

One Education said, it was a pleasure visiting your school to see what you have achieved so far in your wellbeing journey, I can certainly see the dedication and commitment you have in supporting your staff's wellbeing.
A summary of the feedback we got from staff is below. It was clear that staff felt that all school leaders were very supportive, approachable and appreciative of everyone's efforts. The new building has certainly had a huge positive impact on staff wellbeing too and having the right resources and space to support the pupils has really supported staff in both their ability to do their job but also their job satisfaction:
The school was featured on BBC's The One Show as Lioness Demi Stokes visited our school in Blackley, North Manchester to surprise the team and Eco Council with the award.
Jamie Oliver's HQ announced that, "Prospect House have gone the extra mile to ensure their school is as sustainable as possible. They introduced Meat-Free Mondays, as well as offsetting their meat consumption with plant-based meal alternatives (with students embracing this change whole-heartedly!).
As well as regular recycling areas, they also have a food waste station that measures the school’s daily food waste, so they can tweak menu options according to student’s tastes and minimise waste. Food caddies in every classroom also ensure all food waste in school is recycled. There’s even an ‘Eco Warriors’ termly theme, which encourages children to think about sustainability outside of school by looking at areas of food, health, nature (biodiversity), energy, recycling, transport and climate.
Outside of the school building they’re growing ingredients they can use in the school kitchen, compost bins decompose any food and garden waste – and let’s not forget the two therapy pigs Sebastian and Dolores, who eat any leftover fruit and veg, and help the children learn about how to look after animals".
We are incredibly proud of this achievement, and Sustainability and Climate change are both areas we feel incredibly passionate about. A huge thank you to all who have supported and driven this important cause forward.
Effective and positive parent partnerships can have real and lasting impacts on improvements in pupil behaviour, attendance and achievement. Research makes it clear that effective partnership with parents has a major impact on children’s and young people’s learning. The LPPA framework and process draws on high-quality research evidence. The Ofsted inspection process has also increasingly reflected the importance of parent and carer engagement in educational settings.
What does the school have to do to achieve the award?
The school has meet nine evidence-based objectives below to achieve the award:
1. Demonstrate a commitment to work towards achieving the LPPA;
2. Make and implement effective plans to achieve and maintain the LPPA;
3. Show the school is a welcoming, communicative and friendly place for parents;

8. Provide good support for all parents as their children move through or leave the school;
9. Summarise our achievements against the LPPA objectives and outlines for our future plans.
Schools that achieve the LPPA award report:
Each term the LPPA working party will meet to work through each of the nine objectives and collate evidence for the school portfolio.
What can families do to help Prospect House achieve this award?
The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework for all schools and colleges. The award focuses on positive LGBT+, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus other related identities), inclusion and visibility.
The Rainbow Flag Award encourages a whole organisation approach to LGBT+ inclusion, as well as developing strategies to effectively challenge and combat LGBTphobic bullying.
Committing our school to the Rainbow Flag Award is a commitment to improve the lives of all the young people that you work with, as well as the LGBT+ young people in your care, those from LGBT+ families, and LGBT+ staff members.
